The Alameda County Safe Meds Coalition contacted Dr. Kreisberg in 2009, with the goal of reducing unused medications from collecting in homes, Dr. Kreisberg quickly began setting up take-back sites in pharmacies and police stations throughout the county. As of September 2013, there are 30 sites operating in the county. It soon became necessary to develop a sustainable means for funding the program.
In 2012, Dr. Kreisberg co-authored an ordinance, the Safe Medicine Disposal Ordinance that required pharmaceutical manufacturers to create a product stewardship program in the county, providing this vital service to citizens throughout the county.
